The Orissa State Museum , Bhubaneswar is the center of attraction for visitors for it's fabulous collection. It is located near Kalpana Square , 1.5 Kms from the railway station and about 2 kms from airport. It houses more than 56,000 rare antiquities ranging from the ancient to modern time. The collection has been devided into 10 sections,

namely:Archaeology,Epigraphy, Numismatics, Armoury, Mining & Geology, natural History, Arts & Craft, Contemporary Art, Anthropology, & Palm Manuscripts. This is surrounded by sprawling garden, green house, sculpture park.

Archaeology gallery is famous for the rare sculptures of Buddhist, Jain, Saiva, Vaisnav and Sakta pantheon, which includes the fragmentary Ashokan pillar, bell capital, lion, the Buddha, Jain Tirthankaras, Kaliadalan, tantric feagures of Chamunda and many more.The Epigraphy and Numismatic section has Copper plate grants, stone inscriptions, a number of plastercast impression and punched mark premauryan and mauryan age. Kusan & Puri-Kusan coins, Gupta gold coins, siver coins of mughal emperors reflect the historical personality of Orissa. Armoury section housed with variety of ancient weapons like, swords, shields, battle axes, guns& cannons which indicated the military tradition.

The Mining & Geology section depicting semi precious stones, khondolites and sand stones with which the temples of Orissa are built. In the Natural History Gallery birds, mammals of vertebrate & invertebrate specimens have been displayed. In also includes the Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, Nilgais, black bucks and birds preserved amidst natural habitat. The art & craft section houses with veriety of bronze handicraft of 8 th century A.D. It also has bell metal, docra art work along with other folk art items. The anthropology section has the tribal life & culture in original environment milieu. The painting gallery has Ravanaugraha, Tadakabadha, Navagunjara, Buddha Charita, jagannath Triad, Krishna Lila scenes along with contemporary painting & sculptures which are the major visitor's attraction. Palmleaf manuscript comprises twenty seven sections like, Veda, tanra, Darsana, Silpa Sastra, Abhidhana & Ayurved etc.These rare collections of palm leaf manuscripts indicates the rich ancient technology of Orissa. These manuscripts are made of palm-leaf, bamboo leaf, hand-made paper, bhurja bark and kumbhi bark. These manuscripts are specially designed in rare garland shaped, sword shaped, fan shaped, rat shaped and parrot shaped varieties for different purposes.
