The Sun Temple of Konark which is located in the eastern state of Orissa at a distance of 65 km from the capital city Bhubaneswar and around 35 km from the holy city of Puri. The temple was built by Raja Narasimhadeva of the Ganga dynasty in 13 th century to mark a military victory over Mugals. The Sun Temple of Konark is devoted the God Sun. The structure of Sun Temple was build in the shape of a chariot carrying the God Sun or Surya drawn by seven horses with 24 wheels, each about 10 feet in distance, with a set of spokes and sophisticated carvings. The Front of the Sun temple of konark is guarded by the two giant stone lions crusing a war elephant.

There is Nata Mandir at the entrance of sun temple. Nata Mandir is the place where the temple dancers used to perform their dance . There are various geometric and flowery patterns all around the temple. The walls and roof of the temple are carved with the images of foliage, men, animals and other attractive patterns. Amongst these there are three images of the God Sun, located to grab the rays of the sun at morning, noon and evening. |
